North America's smallest and most colorful falcon, the American Kestrel is a bird of extraordinary beauty — and Gene Irvin loved it. In 2019, he painted this loose, impressionistic watercolor portrait: a female Kestrel perched on a branch, looking back over her shoulder with that characteristic alert intelligence, her soft blue-grey wings and warm brown back rendered in delicate ink line work and luminous watercolor washes. The piece is hung in Gene's own home — a personal favorite from his later years.

This original is not for sale. However, Giclée print versions in 8x10" and 5x7" are available in the shop. Click here to view the prints.

About the American Kestrel:
The American Kestrel (Falco sparverius) is the smallest falcon in North America and one of the most widespread raptors on the continent, found from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego. Despite its small size, it is a fierce and agile hunter, hovering in place over open fields before diving on insects, small mammals, and lizards. The male's striking blue-grey wings and rusty-red back make it one of the most colorful raptors in the world.
