The American Kestrel — North America's Smallest Falcon

Gene Irvin's pen, ink, and watercolor portrait of the American Kestrel captures the species' striking beauty — the rufous back, the slate-blue wings of the male, the bold facial markings, and the alert, predatory gaze of a bird that is far more formidable than its sparrow-sized frame suggests. Rendered with Gene's characteristic stippled precision, every feather and facial detail is precisely placed.

Also known as the sparrow hawk, the American Kestrel is the most common falcon in North America, found from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego. It hunts from elevated perches or by hovering in place — wings and tail beating rapidly to hold position — before diving on insects, earthworms, mice, and small birds. It is one of the few raptors with striking sexual dimorphism: males sport slate-blue wings while females are entirely rufous.

Why collectors love it: The Kestrel's vivid plumage and dynamic hunting behavior make it one of the most visually compelling small raptors — and one of Gene's most detailed bird portraits. A standout for falcon enthusiasts and raptor art collectors.
