Walrus | Art Print & Greeting Card by Gene Irvin (1934–2026)
Gene Irvin painted the Walrus the way it feels — massive, ancient, a little melancholy. This close-up portrait is almost entirely watercolor: loose washes of blue, teal, and purple, the ink line work barely there, just enough to trace the long tusks, the bristled whiskers, the small dark eye. It’s one of the most impressionistic pieces in the collection.
Walruses are among the most recognizable animals of the Arctic — those tusks, which can reach three feet in length, are elongated canine teeth used for hauling out onto ice, establishing dominance, and defense. They are highly social animals, gathering in herds of thousands on Arctic beaches and ice floes, communicating through grunts, barks, whistles, and clicks. They are a keystone species of Arctic ecosystems and a vital cultural resource for indigenous communities across the circumpolar north. Climate change and shrinking sea ice are the primary threats to their survival.

Why collectors love it: The Walrus is a rare subject in fine art — and Gene’s impressionistic watercolor portrait gives it a dignity and quiet power that more literal renderings rarely achieve. A standout piece for Arctic wildlife enthusiasts and anyone drawn to loose, painterly work.
