Seahorse | Art Print & Greeting Card by Gene Irvin (1934–2026)
Gene Irvin let the watercolor do the work on this one. The Seahorse glows in vivid yellow, green, and teal washes — loose, luminous, the ink line work tracing the bony rings and curved profile of this most improbable of fish. A pink dorsal fin, a curled tail, a soft blue-green ocean behind it. It’s one of the most colorful pieces in the entire collection.
Seahorses are found in oceans worldwide, recognizable by their horse-like heads, upright swimming posture, and prehensile tails that anchor them to coral and seagrass. They are one of the only species on Earth where the male carries and gives birth to the young — the female deposits eggs into the male’s brood pouch, and he gestates them for weeks before releasing hundreds of tiny, fully-formed seahorses. Many species are threatened by habitat loss and overfishing.
