Gene Irvin’s rules: no rules. This May 2007 collage brings together seven marine fish species that would never actually school together — tropical reef fish, deep-water species, and everything in between — all swimming through the same soft blue watercolor wash. A butterflyfish with yellow stripes, a banded orange-and-white fish, a round orange fish, a dark green spiny fish with blue fins. Each one rendered in precise stippled pen and ink with vibrant watercolor accents.

As Gene put it himself, this piece expresses his appreciation of nature — not as a field guide, but as a celebration. The ocean contains more variety, more color, and more strangeness than any single habitat on land, and this collage captures a little of that wonder.
