The Northern Saw-whet Owl — roughly the size of a robin at 7–8 inches and as little as 2.3 ounces — is one of North America's most capable small predators, hunting mice with precision in dense forest habitats across the continent. Gene Irvin's pen, ink, and watercolor portrait captures the species' oversized personality: the large round head, the bright yellow eyes, and the compact, alert posture of a bird that punches well above its weight.

Saw-whet Owls breed across northern North America and winter in the dense forests of the central and southern US. They are surprisingly strong migrants — in 1999, one was found 70 miles offshore in the Atlantic Ocean near Montauk, New York, having landed on a fishing vessel mid-migration.
