A Female Rufous Hummingbird at the Wildflowers — 2013
While the male Rufous Hummingbird gets the glory with his blazing orange plumage, Gene Irvin's 2013 illustration turns the lens on the female — hovering at yellow wildflowers, her rose-pink throat catching the light, wings a blur of motion. It's a quieter, more intimate composition than the male portrait, and one of Gene's most delicate hummingbird pieces.
The Rufous Hummingbird is one of North America's most tenacious migrants — completing a 3,000-mile journey from western Mexico to southern Alaska each year, one of the longest migrations relative to body size of any bird. Despite weighing less than a nickel, it will aggressively defend its territory against birds many times its size and has even been known to harass small rodents near its nest.
Available in:
- 8×10 fine art print

Why collectors love it: The feeding pose with wildflowers gives this piece a softer, more botanical feel than the standard portrait — a beautiful complement to the Rufous Hummingbird print and a popular choice for greeting cards.
