Ruddy Duck & Cattails | Wildlife Greeting Card by Gene Irvin (1934–2026)

The Ruddy Duck is one of North America's most distinctive waterfowl β€” compact, low-riding, with that signature stiff tail cocked upright and a rust-brown body that glows in the right light. Gene Irvin placed him exactly where he belongs: swimming through a stand of golden cattails, dragonflies hovering above, the whole scene rendered in stippled pen and ink with warm watercolor washes.

Ruddy Ducks breed across the prairie potholes of western North America and winter along both coasts and into Mexico, Guatemala, and El Salvador. Males are famous for their courtship display β€” drumming their bright blue bills against their chests to create a swirl of bubbles on the water's surface. They migrate in small flocks, typically at night.
