About the Greater Roadrunner:
The Greater Roadrunner (Geococcyx californianus) is the state bird of New Mexico and one of the most recognizable birds of the American Southwest. It can run up to 17 mph and is one of the few birds capable of killing and eating rattlesnakes. Its distinctive zygodactyl feet — two toes pointing forward, two pointing back — leave X-shaped tracks that Native American cultures used as protective symbols to confuse evil spirits.
