This one bloomed in Gene's own front yard — and he took a little artistic license with it. The Night-blooming Cereus captures one of the desert's most fleeting spectacles: the enormous flower that opens for a single night before wilting by dawn. Gene rendered the bloom in luminous watercolor, letting his own eye shape the color and light rather than copying nature exactly. In the wild, these flowers are pure satiny white with cream toward the center, golden stamens at the heart, and outer tepals brushed in green, bronze, and reddish-brown — a striking contrast Gene interpreted in his own expressive way.

Night-blooming cereus cacti are native to the tropical and subtropical Americas and can climb to twelve feet tall. Their flowers are enormous — often 8 to 12 inches across — and open only after dark, lasting just a few hours before closing forever. Their brilliant white color reflects the moonlight, drawing in the moths and bats that pollinate them under cover of night. Gene painted this from a substantial specimen that grew right outside his Arizona home, lending the piece a personal significance.
