The Lucifer Hummingbird β Light-Bearer of the Desert Sky
Named from the Latin lucifer β "light-bearing" β the Lucifer Hummingbird earns its name through the male's spectacular iridescent purple gorget, which flares and blazes in sunlight like a living jewel. Gene Irvin's 2015 pen, ink, and watercolor portrait captures the species mid-flight: wings spread, the purple throat catching the light, the green back and pale chest in perfect contrast.
Primarily a species of northern and central Mexico, the Lucifer Hummingbird reaches the US only in extreme southern Arizona, New Mexico, and west Texas β making it a highly sought-after "life bird" for avid birders. It belongs to the "sheartail" group of hummingbirds, named for their deeply forked, narrow tails.
Available in:
- 8Γ10 fine art print
- Greeting card with envelope
Why collectors love it: A rare and visually stunning species β the Lucifer's flaring purple gorget and sheartail silhouette make this one of Gene's most dramatic hummingbird portraits. A must-have for serious hummingbird and Southwest birding enthusiasts.
