Leatherback Turtle with Pilot Fish | Art Print & Greeting Card by Gene Irvin (1934–2026)
The Leatherback Turtle is the largest reptile on Earth — up to 7 feet long and weighing as much as 2,000 pounds, with a smooth, leathery shell unlike any other sea turtle. Gene Irvin captured it in November 2009 in full-body underwater portrait: dense stippled pen and ink rendering of that massive, streamlined form, powerful flippers extended, small striped Pilot Fish swimming alongside in the soft blue watercolor wash.
The relationship between Leatherbacks and Pilot Fish is mutualistic — the fish gain shelter and protection from the turtle’s size, while they return the favor by eating parasites and skin debris, keeping the turtle healthy. It’s one of the ocean’s quiet partnerships, playing out in open water far from shore.
Leatherbacks are critically endangered, threatened by habitat loss, climate change, plastic pollution, and accidental capture in fishing gear. They migrate thousands of miles between nesting beaches and feeding grounds, diving deeper than any other reptile.
Available in:

Why collectors love it: A rare subject in wildlife art — the Leatherback Turtle is seldom depicted with the scale and detail it deserves. Gene’s stippled portrait captures the sheer mass and quiet power of this ancient animal, with the Pilot Fish adding a story within the story.
