Indian Rhino | Art Print by Gene Irvin (1934–2026)

This is Gene at his most textural. The Indian Rhino is a study in surface — the deep skin folds and riveted, armor-plated hide rendered in patient, layered pen & ink, with soft watercolor washes lending the grey-brown coloration its weight. The single horn and the heavy set of the body give the piece a prehistoric grandeur, while the eye holds the quiet steadiness of an animal that has endured for millennia.

The Indian rhinoceros (Rhinoceros unicornis) is native to the grasslands and forests of the Indian subcontinent and is the second-largest rhino species, with males weighing up to 2.2 tons. Recognizable by its single black horn and distinctive skin folds, it browses on grass, leaves, and aquatic plants. Once on the brink, conservation efforts have brought its numbers back to roughly 3,600 — yet it remains vulnerable to habitat loss and poaching.
