Humpback Whale and Calf | Art Print & Greeting Card by Gene Irvin (1934–2026)
A mother Humpback Whale and her calf, swimming together through open ocean. Gene Irvin captured this November 2009 scene in dense stippled pen and ink — the mother’s massive form above, the calf tucked alongside, every barnacle cluster and ventral pleat rendered in precise detail against a soft blue watercolor wash. It’s one of the most emotionally resonant pieces in the collection.
Humpback Whales are found in coastal waters throughout the world’s oceans, migrating thousands of miles between polar feeding grounds and tropical breeding areas. Adults can weigh up to 66,000 pounds and live 45–50 years. They are famous for their complex, haunting songs — moans, howls, and cries that can last for hours and carry for miles through the water. Once hunted nearly to extinction, Humpback populations have rebounded significantly following international protections.
