Grey Crowned Crane | Greeting Card by Gene Irvin (1934–2026)

There is no bird quite like the Grey Crowned Crane. That golden halo of stiff feathers radiating from the crown, the white cheek patch, the vivid blue eye, the red wattle — it looks like something from mythology. Gene Irvin captured it in close-up portrait in 2018: stippled pen and ink over soft pink and red watercolor washes, the crown rendered in loose, explosive detail that perfectly captures its wild, feathered energy.

Also known as the African Crowned Crane, this species stands about 3 feet tall and inhabits wetlands, flooded grasslands, and open savannas across sub-Saharan Africa. It is the national bird of Uganda. Crowned Cranes are among the oldest living bird families on Earth, with fossil records dating back 37 million years. They are known for their elaborate courtship dances — bowing, jumping, and spreading their wings in synchronized displays.
