Great Blue Heron | Wildlife Greeting Card by Gene Irvin (1934β2026)
The Great Blue Heron is the largest heron in North America β a prehistoric-looking bird that stands nearly 4.5 feet tall with a wingspan of up to 6.6 feet. Gene Irvin captured it in close-up portrait: that piercing yellow eye, the long dagger bill, the shaggy chest plumes that give it such a regal, ancient quality. Stippled pen and ink over soft blue-grey watercolor washes, signed April 2011.
Great Blue Herons are found across North America from Alaska to Mexico, wading the edges of rivers, lakes, marshes, and coastal estuaries with extraordinary patience. They stand motionless for minutes at a time before striking with lightning speed. Despite their size, they are agile fliers β often spotted crossing open sky with slow, deep wingbeats and neck folded back.
