There's something almost paradoxical about the Prickly Poppy — a flower of extraordinary delicacy growing on stems armed with fierce spines. Arizona artist Gene Irvin captured that tension beautifully in 2021: a luminous white bloom with crinkled petals and a golden center, its spiny green bud rising alongside it, the whole composition set against warm washes of orange and blue that evoke the sun-baked landscapes where this wildflower thrives.

Inscribed in Gene's own hand — “Argemone munita / Flatbud prickly poppy / Gene Irvin / 2021” — this piece is as personal as it is beautiful.

This is not a print. This is the original, one-of-a-kind artwork — drawn and painted by hand, signed by the artist, and ready to hang.

About the Flatbud Prickly Poppy:
Argemone munita, known as the Flatbud Prickly Poppy or Chicalote (from the Spanish for “armed”), is a native wildflower found across California, Arizona, Nevada, and Baja California. A member of the poppy family, it produces large, crinkled white flowers with bright yellow or orange stamens, growing on spiny stems that contain a distinctive yellow sap. It thrives in deserts, dry mountain slopes, and disturbed soils — one of the Southwest's most striking and resilient wildflowers.
