Flatbud Prickly Poppy (Chicalote) | Art Print & Greeting Card by Gene Irvin (1934–2026)
This is Gene at his most delicate. The Flatbud Prickly Poppy captures the wildflower's crinkled, tissue-paper white petals encircling a bright ring of golden stamens — a soft, luminous bloom set against the spiny, silver-green stems that give the plant its name. Gene renders the contrast beautifully: the fragile flower above, the armored foliage below, in watercolor washes and fine pen & ink detail.
Also known as chicalote — from the Spanish for "armed" — the flatbud prickly poppy (Argemone munita) is a hardy native wildflower of the American Southwest, thriving from the deserts to the mountains across Arizona, Nevada, California, and Baja. Its spiny stems and leaves carry a yellow sap, and its papery white blooms are a familiar sight along desert roadsides and open slopes in the warm season.
