Asian Elephant | Art Print & Greeting Card by Gene Irvin (1934–2026)

This is Gene at his most contemplative. The Asian Elephant emerges in fine pen & ink — the smaller ears, the rounded back, the domed head all distinguishing it from its African cousin. Watercolor washes give the hide its dusty grey-brown warmth, and the eye carries a gentleness that reflects the species' long cultural bond with the people of South and Southeast Asia.

Asian elephants are smaller than their African relatives and have been revered for centuries in Hindu and Buddhist traditions. They inhabit the wet forests and grasslands of the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia, living in matriarchal herds of six to seven related females. Their advanced neocortex enables complex social bonds, problem-solving, tool use, and long-term memory. With fewer than 50,000 remaining in the wild, they are listed as endangered.
