Desert Cottontail Rabbit | Art Print & Greeting Card by Gene Irvin (1934–2026)
This one is close to home. The Desert Cottontail was a frequent visitor around Gene's desert property, and his affection for the little animal shows in every line. Fine pen & ink captures the soft texture of the fur and the alert set of the ears, while gentle watercolor washes give the coat its warm, dusty desert tones. There's a quiet stillness to the piece — the rabbit caught mid-pause, ears up, listening.
The desert cottontail, also known as Audubon's cottontail, ranges across the arid Southwest, from Arizona and New Mexico through the deserts of California and Nevada. Herbivores by nature, they browse on grasses, mesquite, and the juicy pads of prickly pear — rarely needing to drink, drawing most of their water from the plants they eat and morning dew. Unlike European rabbits, they don't dig social burrow systems, yet they remain remarkably tolerant of one another across the open desert.
