Christmas Island Frigatebird | Art Print & Greeting Card by Gene Irvin (1934–2026)

The Christmas Island Frigatebird is one of the rarest birds on Earth. Found only on Christmas Island, Australia, this critically endangered seabird numbers fewer than 2,500 individuals — and that number continues to decline. Gene Irvin captured the male in 2017: that dramatic inflated pink-red gular pouch, the dark iridescent plumage, the long hooked bill, rendered in precise stippled pen and ink over a soft blue watercolor wash. He labeled it himself — Critically Endangered — right on the illustration.

Frigatebirds are remarkable fliers, spending most of their lives aloft over tropical oceans. They are kleptoparasites — stealing food from other seabirds mid-flight — and are incapable of landing on water due to their non-waterproof feathers. The Christmas Island species faces threats from habitat loss, introduced predators, and climate change.
