Black Rhino | Art Print & Greeting Card by Gene Irvin (1934–2026)
This is Gene at his most urgent. The Black Rhino emerges in dense pen & ink — the thick, armored hide rendered in layer upon layer of crosshatching, the great horns sweeping upward with a weight that feels almost mythic. Watercolor washes shift between brown and grey, capturing the animal's true coloration, which is far from black. The eye holds a wary intelligence — the gaze of a creature that has survived millennia only to face its greatest threat from us.
Black rhinos are critically endangered, with fewer than 6,500 remaining in the wild. They roam the savannas and scrublands of eastern and southern Africa, browsing on shrubs and trees with their prehensile upper lip. Despite their formidable appearance, they are hunted illegally for their horns, which are traded on the black market. Poaching has driven their population to a fraction of its historical range, making them one of the most closely protected species on Earth.
