Belted Kingfisher | Wildlife Greeting Card by Gene Irvin (1934β2026)
The Belted Kingfisher is one of North America's most recognizable waterbirds β that oversized crest, the dagger bill, the rattling call that announces its presence long before you spot it. Gene Irvin captured a female in this 2003 pen, ink, and watercolor portrait: perched on driftwood, rusty belly band visible, alert and ready to dive.
Found along rivers, lakes, ponds, and coastlines across North America, the Belted Kingfisher is one of the few bird species where the female is more colorful than the male β her rusty chest band sets her apart. She excavates nest burrows up to 6 feet deep in riverbanks, and can hover in place before plunge-diving for fish.
