Bear in Aspens | Art Print & Greeting Card by Gene Irvin (1934–2026)
This is Gene at his most atmospheric. The Bear in Aspens places a solitary black bear among the white-barked trunks of an autumn aspen grove — the leaves burning yellow and orange, the bear's dark form a quiet counterpoint to the luminous forest around it. The oval composition gives the piece a timeless, almost medallion-like quality, and the pen & ink linework captures both the texture of bark and fur with equal patience.
Black bears are the most widely distributed bear species in North America, ranging from the forests of the American Southwest and Rocky Mountains to the boreal woodlands of Canada and Alaska. Aspen groves — iconic across the high-elevation landscapes of Arizona, Colorado, and Utah — are among their favored habitats in autumn, when the trees turn gold and the bears forage before winter. Gene created this piece in 2008, and it remains one of the most beloved works in the collection.
