The Barred Owl β Ancient Woodland Hunter
Mottled brown and white with deep, nearly black eyes, the Barred Owl is one of North America's most recognizable birds of prey. Gene Irvin's pen, ink, and watercolor portrait captures the species' quiet intensity β the layered feather detail, the broad facial disc, and the stillness of a bird that has haunted North American woodlands for at least 11,000 years (Pleistocene fossils have been found in Florida, Tennessee, and Ontario).
Barred Owls inhabit wooded river bottoms, swamps, and mature coniferous forests from the American South to the Pacific Northwest. Active at dawn and dusk, they hunt small mammals and are best known for their distinctive baritone call β "Who cooks for you? Who cooks for you-all?" β a familiar sound in southern wetlands where mated pairs call back and forth.
