The Anna’s Hummingbird is named for the 19th century Italian duchess Anna Massena. It is found mostly in California where it is the most common hummingbird species and migrates to higher elevations in summer and lower in winter, rather than migrating north or south. Known by its iridescent crimson-red crown, Anna’s is the only North American hummingbird species with a red crown.
