The Angelfish is one of the most recognizable freshwater fish in the world — that tall, triangular profile, the bold black vertical stripes, the long trailing ventral fins that drift like ribbons in slow current. Gene Irvin captured it in February 2007: stippled pen and ink over a warm yellow watercolor wash, the fish rendered in precise black-and-white detail against a loose, luminous background.

Native to the slow-moving streams and flooded forests of the Amazon Basin in South America, Angelfish are among the most popular aquarium fish on Earth. There are 13 recognized species, all native to tropical South America, and they have been selectively bred in captivity for over a century into dozens of color varieties. In the wild, they are ambush predators, using their tall, flat profile to hide among aquatic plants before striking at small fish and invertebrates.
