American Kestrel in Flight | Wildlife Art Print & Greeting Card by Gene Irvin (1934–2026)
The American Kestrel — commonly called the sparrow hawk — is the smallest and most colorful falcon in North America, and one of the most captivating in flight. Gene Irvin captured it banking hard, wings fully spread: rufous back, spotted breast, banded tail, every feather rendered in precise stippled pen and ink over a soft blue watercolor wash.
Kestrels are found across North America from Alaska to Patagonia — perched on telephone wires, hovering into the breeze with uncanny stillness before dropping on an insect or small rodent below. Despite their small size, they are fierce, fast, and fearless. They are also cavity nesters, readily adopting nest boxes in open country.
