African Elephant | Art Print & Greeting Card by Gene Irvin (1934–2026)
Gene Irvin spent March 23, 2014 stippling this African Elephant into existence — dot by dot, wrinkle by wrinkle, the massive ear spread wide, the trunk curled downward, a small ivory tusk just visible at the lower left. Pure pen and ink on white, no color, no wash. Just the elephant, rendered in extraordinary detail. It is one of the most technically demanding pieces in the entire collection.
The African Elephant is the largest land animal on Earth — and one of the most endangered. From an estimated 3–5 million animals a century ago, the wild population has fallen to approximately 415,000. Poaching for ivory remains the primary driver of decline, alongside habitat loss, fragmentation, and human-elephant conflict across sub-Saharan Africa. They are highly intelligent, deeply social animals with complex family structures, long memories, and documented mourning behavior.
